Elder brother of outlawed GMF chief arrested

Police arrested Sahidul Islam alias Mohon alias Mohon Huzur, elder brother of outlawed Gono Mukti Fouz (GMF) chief Aminul Islam Mukul from Benapole immigration in Jessore on Friday night. At a press briefing yesterday at Kushtia police line, Assistant Police Superintendent (ASP) Chokdar Abdul Halim disclosed this to newsmen. He said Mohon was arrested earlier by Indian immigration police on Friday morning when he was returning to Bangladesh with a date expired visa. Getting the information in the afternoon from Indian immigration, Benapole immigration police checked the matter with Kushtia police. On confirmation, a team of Detective Branch (DB) of Kushtia police led by ASP Halim rushed to the spot, arrested Mohon and brought him to Kushtia. Police said, Mohon went to India on June 11 to meet Mukul who is now in Bongaon jail in West Bengal. According to police, Mohon is also involved in various crimes including extortion. He was sentenced to seven years imprisonment by a Meherpur court for drug trading in 1993. Known as 'cashier' of the outfit, Mohon carried out extortion and used to collect money as per instruction of Mukul. ASP Halim told journalists that they have the evidence that Mohon collected Tk 11 lakh from Baliapara cattle market for Mukul on May 28. Mohon also met with Mukul's wife Sajeda Khatun who is staying at a two-storied building in Hatpara area in Chilahata in West Bengal. The house is owned by Mukul, the ASP said. Aminul Islam Mukul, chief of Gono Mukti Fouz, was arrested in India on November 21 last year. He was sentenced to 13 years jail by a Bongaon court recently.
