Students of Rajshahi University (RU) on Friday night blocked Dhaka-Rajshahi highway protesting attack on a student by an auto-rickshaw driver. Sources said, an auto-rickshaw driver severely stabbed Sajib, a second year student of marketing department as he protested the driver's misbehaviour while returning to the campus from the city's Bhodra area at around 7:30pm. Sajib was admitted to Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital (RMCH) with serious stab injury on his head while the driver went into hiding. As the news spread to the campus, several hundred students put up barricade on the road in front of the university main gate, disrupting traffic for two hours from 10:00pm. RU Proctor Prof Chowdhury Zakaria rushed to the spot and assured the agitating students of taking necessary legal steps within 12 hours. Later at a meeting, Prof Zakaria, officer-in-charge of Motihar police station Abul Khair and auto- rickshaw owners' association president Shampura Manik decided to arrest the driver and fine him Tk 5,000. Motihar police yesterday morning arrested driver Jamal Uddin's father Zinnat Ali, a resident of the city's Asami Colony, as the driver was on the run. In the afternoon, some auto-rickshaw drivers chased RU students near Talaimary interception as police arrested the accused driver's father. At this, several hundred students again barricaded the highway in front of the university Kazla gate disrupting the traffic movement for another one hour. Angered by fresh blockade, locals along with shopkeepers chased the students away from the highway. The chase and counter-chase continued for half an hour till a huge number of law enforcers rushed to the spot at around 3:00pm.
