Extortionists attack houses for refusal to pay illegal toll
Extortionists attacked houses of two traders in Chuadanga and Meherpur districts on Friday night after failing to realise toll from them.
In Chuadanga, a gang threw two bombs at the house of Aslam Uddin at Uzzalpur village in Sadar upazila at around midnight.
Aslam, a businessman is also general secretary of Begumpur union unit BNP.
Police said the extortionists demanded Tk 2 lakh from Aslam several days ago. They threatened him to kill as he refused to pay the amount.
On Friday night a gang of 5/6 came to Aslam's house and called him to come out.
Seeing no response, the gang threw two bombs at Aslam's house, one of which exploded with a big bang.
However, none was injured in the attack.
In Meherpur, criminals demanded Tk 1 lakh from grocer Abdur Rahman of Mohiskhola village in Gngni upazila of the district.
As Rahman refused to pay the amount, the extortionists threatened to kill him.
On Friday at about 11:00pm, a gang went to his house and threw a bomb.
The bomb damaged the corrugated tin made roof of Rahman. None was injured in the incident.
In Kushtia, Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested two arms peddlers after a gunfight and recovered firearms and ammunition at Mirpara village in Daulatpur upazila on Friday night.
An arms peddler and a Rab member were injured during the incident.
Acting on a tip off, a team of Rab-12 led by Major Zakir, commander of the battalion, Kushtia unit went to the house of one Moazzem Hossain of the village at about 10:30 pm.
Two Rab men, in the guise of buyers, met Sahajul, the ringleader.
Sahajul showed a pistol to the Rab men.
At one stage, an arms peddler shouted from another room that the buyers were the members of law forcing agency.
The gang then attacked the two Rab men and confined them to a room at gunpoint.
Sensing the situation, other members of the elite force rushed to the spot.
At this, the arms peddlers opened fire on Rab forcing them to retaliate, Major Zakir said.
Rab arrested injured Sahajul and Moazzem from the spot while other arms peddlers managed to flee.
Rab also recovered a pistol and five bullets from the possession of the arrestees.
UNB adds: Detective Branch of police in separate drives on Wednesday morning held three criminals along with a gun from different areas of the district town.
The arrestees were identified as Rabin, 20, Kajal, 21, and Lincon,19, listed criminals and drug peddlers of the district.
DB police sources said Rabin, following a quarrel, opened fire on his maternal uncle Tuesday noon in Rajarhat area of the town. But missing the target the bullet hit a child leaving him critically injured.
After the incident, DB police, in a drive, arrested Rabin from Bajlar crossing area the next day. Later, on the basis of his confessional statement they held Kajol along with the gun and Lincon from Rajarhat area.
