Lightning kills 5, injures 16

Five people were killed and 16 others injured by lightning in four districts yesterday. A man and his wife were killed as lightning struck them at village Shorabaria in Atghoria upazila under Pabna district early yesterday. The victims are Md Mohidul Islam,30, of village Hapania and his wife Eti Khatun,25. Sources said, Mohidul came to his father-in-law's house at village Shorabaria on Tuesday. The lightning struck their room at about 6:00 am killing the couple in their sleep, reports our correspondent. In Thakurgaon, one person was killed and 12 others were injured by lightning at Chopradangi and Khutamara villages under Debiganj upazila in Panchagarh yesterday afternoon, reports our correspondent. The dead was identified as Abdul Malek,32, son of Abdus Sobhan of Chopradangi village under Debiganj upazila in Panchagarh. Locals said, the thunderbolt struck one Abdul Malek's house while he was in the room. He died on the spot. In a separate incident, 12 students of Mirza Golam Hafiz High School of Khutamara village in Debiduba union under Debiganj upazila were injured when a thunderbolt struck the roof of their class room. In Kurigram, lightning killed one person and injured another in two separate incidents. Police, hospital and local sources said Hazrat Ali, 35, of Shapkhawa village of Rayganj union under Nageswari upazila was killed by lightning at about 9:45 am when he went out to catch fish amid rain. Lightning hit Marjina Begum, 40, wife of Nazrul Islam of Shatibari village in Sadar upazila injuring her seriously. She was admitted to Kurigram Sadar Hospital, reports our correspondent. In Sirajganj, one person was killed and three others were injured in separate incidents of lightning at two villages under Chouhali upazila yesterday. The deceased was identified as Samia Begum, 35, wife of Alek of Shailajana village, reports a correspondent. Another thunderbolt hit a house at Amarpur village of the same upazila leaving three housewives seriously injured. The injured were identified as Marium Khatun, 55, wife of Khorshed Mistree, Amena, 20, wife of Sanowar Hossain and Sakina, 30, wife of Salam of Amarpur village.
