Wild elephants in Sherpur damage 27 houses, crops
At least 27 houses were damaged in an attack by a band of wild elephants at frontier Panihata village in Nalitabari upazila early yesterday.
Local sources said about 50/60 wild elephants from jungle in nearby areas stormed into the village and destroyed 27 houses.
The elephants also damaged crops and fruits at the village.
As the villagers along with torch tried to drive the animals away, an elephant snatched away a torch from a man and then threw it on a house owned by Bijon kabir, setting it on fire.
The house was, however, slightly damaged in the fire.
Affected people claimed that valuables worth Tk 35 lakh were destroyed in the attack by the elephants.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Zahirul Haque said that the wild elephants stormed the village searching for foods.
