Series of robberies in night coaches, houses in Satkhira

Robbers looted night coaches and houses in Satkhira and Moulvibazar yesterday and the day before while they killed a BNP leader in Bandarban on Friday. According to our correspondent in Satkhira, a series of robberies were committed at Dakkhin Nalta village in Tala upazila early yesterday. The robbers decamped with the booties from night coaches and houses. Police said, a gang of robbers numbering 10 to 12 armed with deadly weapons put up barricade on the Khulna-Paikgachha Road near the village and stopped several Paikgachha-bound night coaches at gun point at about 3am. They beat up the passengers and took away cash and other valuables worth Tk 35,000 from them. Later, the gang raided the houses of Mafijul Islam Sardar, Hafijul Islam Gazi, Enayet Ali, Hafizul Islam Sardar and Daud Ali Gazi of the village, police said. They beat up the members of those houses and looted gold ornaments, cash, mobile sets and other valuable worth Tk 2 lakh at gunpoint. Two separate cases were filed with Tala police station in this connection. On information, a police team led by sub-inspector (SI) Khadija Begum went to the spot. Sensing the presence of police, the robbers left scene with the booties. In Moulvibazar, robbers tooled a house in the district town on Saturday night, reports our correspondent. The robbers decamped with valuables of Tk 10 lakh, victims said. According to locals and police, a gang of armed robbers stormed into the house of local trader Ali Hussain at West Barhat at about 2.30am. They entered the house by breaking open the iron gate grills and doors of the house. The masked robbers then took the keys of lockers from the house members on dagger point and looted 32 tolas of gold ornaments, cash Tk two lakh and 3 sets of cell phone. They also ransacked the entire house. In Bandarban, a local BNP leader was stabbed to death by a gang of robbers in Lama upazila headquarters on Friday night, reports UNB. The deceased was identified as M Yunus, 50, son of Isahak Ali and president of Ward No. 7 unit of BNP of the upazila Sadar union. Police said, a gang of robbers entered his house at dead of night to commit a robbery. As Yunus tried to resist them, the robbers stabbed him to death and fled the scene. On information, police recovered his body and sent it to Sadar hospital morgue for autopsy. A case was filed. In Jhenidah, police in a drive on Friday arrested two inter-district robbers at Pirojpur village in Kaliganj upazila. The arrestees were identified as ringleader Iqbal and his accomplice Ayub Ali. Acting on a tip-off, a police team raided the village and arrested them. Police said they were wanted in a number of robberies and other criminal cases.
