'Outlaw' in Khulna gives death threat to 10

A cell phone caller introducing himself as a leader of outlawed Purbo Banglar Communist Party (PBCP) has given death threat to ten persons including academics, journalists, a political leader, a businessman and a senior police officer of Khulna if they fail to give toll as per demand. The death threat recipients include Pro Vice Chancellor of Khulna University Dr Purnendu Chandra Gayeen, Deputy Registrars of the same University Ali Akbar and Sirajul Islam, Principal Dr Ahmed Reza and two other officials of Daulatpur Government BL college, President of Khulna district unit of Jubo League Kamruzzaman Jamal, senior staff reporter of Dainik Janmabhumi and Khulna correspondent of Dainik Amader Samoy Mahbub Alam Sohag and businessman Abdus Salam of Phultala upazila of Khulna district. "We need more money after spending over 70 lakh taka for helping the bereaved families of our armed cadres who were killed by Rapid Action Battalion and police in crossfire incidents," the caller, who introduced himself as Abdul Matin, operations commander of PBCP (Janajuddho) in south-western region, told the recipients during the last one week. He asked for paying the demanded tolls within a week. The pro vice chancellor and two deputy registrars of Khulna University, who received death threat on June 1, filed general diary with Batiaghata police station on June 3. Daulatpur Government BL College Principal Dr Ahmed Reza and businessman Abdus Salam of Fultala upazila also filed general diaries with the police stations concerned seeking security of life. Two officials of Daulatpur Government BL College, who received death threat from the extremist demanding toll of Tk 2 lakh, also filed general diaries with Daulatpur police station in this connection. Journalist Mahbub Alam Sohag and Jubo League leader Kamruzzaman Jamal said they had received death threats over cell phone on Thursday and Friday night respectively. The senior police officer of Khulna, who received similar threat from the same caller, requested not to disclose his name in the media. Admitting the incidents, Khulna Police Superintendent Md Tanvir Haider Chowdhury said, "Vigorous investigation has started to detect the caller who is demanding huge tolls in the name of Janajuddho faction of outlawed PBCP. The caller is staying outside Khulna district." Businessman Md Anwar Hossain of Bagerhat has demanded security of life from the commissioner of Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) as he received death threats from the prime accused of the case filed for murder of his son. Anwar Hossain's son Md Bedar Hossain Molla was killed on the night of January 3 in 2008 and his body was recovered the next morning from Cococola Ghat on the bank of Rupsha River under Khulna Sadar police station. Anwar Hossain filed a case on January 4 in 2008 against two named persons and a few unidentified others on charge of murdering his son but Khulna thana police failed to make any headway into investigation during last two and a half years, he said in the press statement on Saturday. One of the suspects of the murder case, Tarikul Islam alias John, 30, arrested last week by Khulna police, had threatened to kill him after getting bail from the court, he said.
