41 cyclone shelters being built in Bagerhat district
Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) is building 41 cyclone shelters in Bagerhat district at a cost of Tk 52 crore 5 lakh and 67 thousand under the Primary Education Development Project-2.
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and some donor countries are providing financial assistance for implementation of the project during 2008-09 financial year, sources said.
Construction work of 15 out of 41 cyclone shelters have already been completed while construction work of 26 others are nearing completion.
When constructed, these 41 cyclone shelters would be able to accommodate at least 50,000 people made homeless by natural disasters such as cyclone and tidal surge.
These cyclone shelters being constructed at Sharankhola, Morrelganj, Rampal, Mongla and Kachua upazila can also be used as schools, said executive engineer of Bagerhat office of LGED Shushanto Pal. With these 41, the total number of cyclone shelters in the district stands at 194, he said.
The executive engineer further said that 400 more cyclone shelters would be needed for six lakh people of cyclone-prone coastal belt of Bagerhat district.
