6 children drown in ponds in Sherpur, Gaibandha
Six children drowned in ponds in separate places in Sherpur and Gaibandha districts in the last three days.
In Sherpur, four children downed in ponds in Sadar and Nalitabari upazilas of the district on Sunday and Monday, according to UNB.
Locals said two children -- Usha, 5, of Tarakandi village and Nupur, 4, of Charsapmari village of Sadar upazila fell in the pond while playing near it at about 3pm on Monday.
Asif, 4, and his cousin Rubel, 3, slided and fell in a pond near their houses at Poragaon village of Nalitabari upazila and met the watery grave on Sunday afternoon.
In Gaibandha, two children drowned in a pond at Jhamudanga village in Sadullapur upazila of the district yesterday evening when they went there to attend a religious ceremony reports our Correspondent.
The victims are Govinda Chandra Sarkar, 7, and Biplob Chandra Sarkar, 2.
Eye witnesses said, relatives of late Bhola Nath Sarkar came from far-flung areas to the village yesterday to join his 'sraddha' and assembled at the house of the disceased.
Meanwhile, the two children went to play on the bank of the pond. All of a sudden they fell in the pond and downed as both did not know how to swim.
Relatives later found their bodies floating in the water.
