A court yesterday sentenced seven members of militant Islamist outfit Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) to seven years rigorous imprisonment (RI) for their involvement in the serial bomb blasts on August 17, 2005. The verdict was delivered in the afternoon by Judge Sakander Ali of Khulna Speedy Trial Tribunal. Five out of seven convicts were present in the court at the time of the verdict as the rest two are on the run. The five convicts are Mahbubur Rahman alias Liton, Md Shahidulah alias Lokman, Asadul Islam, Tanvir Hossain and Ruhul Quddus. Names of the two absconders could not be known. The convicted persons were directly involved in the serial bomb blasts at eight spots of Khulna city on August 17, 2005, according to the chargesheet submitted to court. The JMB cadres, however, rejected the verdict saying they would not accept any trial of the case under a government which is not Islamic. Security measures were strengthened around the court when the JMB men were brought to court from Khulna district jail.
