65 hurt as storms lash 2 districts

Storms injured at least 65 people and caused extensive damage to houses and crops in Jhenidah and Jessore yesterday. A storm in Jhenidah lashed at least 40 villages of 5 unions in the morning injuring 15 people. The storm that lasted for about 20 minutes caused extensive damage to crops and houses, reports our correspondent. The affected five unions are Swaruppur union, Kazirber union and Fatepur union of Moheshpur upazila and Sarutia union, Hakimpur union of Shailokupa upazila. Mung and jute plants on hundreds of acres of land and around 500 houses were damaged and scores of trees uprooted during the storm. Most of the institutions in Shailkupa upazila have also been damaged. The injured are Tofazzal, Nasir, Sindabad, Sagarika, Halima and 10 students in Shailkupa upazila. The most affected villages are Palianpur, Kazirber, Samanta, Lalkur, Dalbhanga and Charratanpur under Kazirber uinon, Mathabhanga, Gopalpur, Matpara, Kulbaria, Gobindapur, Bhagabatipara Dipti and others in Bashbaria union, Sharutia, Nadpara, Teghuri, Shahbaria and Darkul in Sharutia union and Purbamadla, Paschimmadla, Dohara and Harihara in Hakimpur union. According to the chairman of Kazirber union under Moheshpur upazila, the storm caused huge extensive damage to mung pulses and jute plants. It destroyed about 100 houses in Kazirber union alone, he said. UNO Azmul Haq of Shailkupa upazila who visited the affected villages in Shailkupa upazila said at least 500 houses and thousands of trees have been damaged by the storm. In Jessore, a storm lashed five villages under Paira union under Abhaynagar upazila yesterday morning damaging hundreds of dwelling houses. The storm also left at least 50 people injured and a large number of trees uprooted. People living near Nawapara industrial town said, the storm that lasted for about a minute hit Paira, Barandi, Arpara, Chomordanga and Ghoradari villages under Abhaynagar upazila, reports a correspondent.
