1 killed, 135 hurt as villagers clash
Separate incidents in three districts
One person was killed and at least 135 people were injured as rival groups of villagers in three districts clashed yesterday and the day before.
Our Staff Correspondent in Bogra reports: A man was killed and at least 35 others were injured in a clash between two groups over a piece of land at Jugirbhaban village in Kahalu upazila of the district yesterday morning.
Locals said the clash ensued between Profullah group and Sanatan Goshwami supporters at about 9:00am over control of 100 bighas of debottor (gifted) land.
Both the groups equipped with sticks and locally made weapons attacked each other, leaving one Mokshed, 35, dead and at least 35 injured. The clash continued for about one and a half hours.
Mokshed died on way to capital Dhaka for treatment while the injured were admitted to local hospitals and clinics.
Our Correspondent in Netrakona reports: At least 50 people were injured as rival villagers clashed over occupying a water body at Ichhapur village under Khaliajuri upazila in the district.
Police and locals said there was a conflict between Abdul Malek and Indranath Barman over occupying the water body. Yesterday morning when Indranath and his men went to the disputed water body for fishing, Malek and his people attacked them with sharp and lethal weapons. At least 50 people from both groups were injured in the fierce clash.
Seriously injured Abdul Malek, Raham Ali, Sanjit Kumer, Abdul Khalek, Sanju Mia, Nani, Ramzan Ali and Sobahan were sent to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital in critical condition. Others were admitted into local health complex.
Two separate cases were filed with Khaliajuri police station in this connection.
In Habiganj, over 50 people were injured in a fierce clash between two rival groups at Mugkandi village in Bahubal upazila on Sunday.
Police and locals said there was longstanding conflict between Akhanji family and Londoni group of Satkapon union.
With prior announcement, supporters of two groups equipped with home made lethal weapons attacked each other in the evening leaving over 50 people from both sides injured.
On information, police rushed to the spot and fired 10 black shots in a bid to bring the situation under control.
Of the injured, five were admitted to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital in critical condition.
