5 Jamaat-Shibir men arrested in Rajshahi, Sylhet

Motihar police in Rajshahi yesterday arrested a Jamaat-e Islami leader and Shibir cadre for their role in the February 9 violence and killing at Rajshahi University. Away in Sylhet, four Shibir leaders were arrested from a mess in the city yesterday in connection with a police assault case. The arrestees in Rajshahi are Afaz Uddin Sarker, a Nayeb-e Ameer of Katakhali municipal unit Jamaat and Shibir worker Abdur Razzak, a second year student of RU anthropology department, reports our staff correspondent. Tofazzel Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Motihar police station said Afaz was arrested from Maskatadighi area in the city yesterday afternoon when he came out of hiding. "Afaz could not be arrested in connection with the case as he had high court bail. He was arrested yesterday in other cases filed for violence", said the OC. Abdur Razzak was held from his department in connection with the cases filed by Bangladesh Chhatra League. According to Rajshahi police, at least 88 Jamaat and Shibir leaders and activists got anticipatory bail from the high court in five cases lodged in connection with the RU violence. However, police so far recorded 11 cases over the attacks at different halls. The RU violence left BCL worker Faruk Hossain killed and around 100 injured. Our Staff Correspondent in Sylhet reports: Kotwali police yesterday arrested Four Shibir leaders in connection with February 12 police assault case. The arrestees are Anwarul Wadud Tipu, president of the Madan Mohan College unit of Shibir, Yousuf Bin Nuri Chowdhury alias Sunny, general secretary and Tanvir Ahmed, oranising secretary of the same unit and Manzur Ahmed, finance secretary of the city unit of the student body. All of them were caught yesterday afternoon from a students' mess near the college area at Rikabibazar in the city. Officer in-charge (OC) of Kotwali PS told this correspondent that the arrestees were caught in connection with the police assault case, filed after violence at a Jamaat procession in the city on February 12. The processionists and police chased each other on the day leaving 30 injured. Police filed assault case against 300 people including 36 Jamaat and Shibir leaders. Eleven people were earlier arrested by police in the case.
