Trade thru' Benapole resumes after 3 days

A Correspondent, Benapole
Trading through Benapole land port resumed yesterday morning after a halt for three consecutive days. Import and export of items remained suspended till Sunday due to holidays in both Bangladesh and Indian sides. Trading did not take place at Benapole due to weekly holiday on Friday and Eid-e-Miladunnabi on Saturday. Indians observed holiday on Sunday due to Holi festival. On resumption of trade, 172 truckloads of goods have been imported from India since yesterday morning while 76 trucksloads of commodities exported to India. Perishable goods including onion, garlic, fruits and fish have suffered damage as all the carriers were stuck at the land port for three days at a stretch. Production in different industries including garment units was also hampered during the period as 100 percent of the raw materials of these industries are imported from India through the port. Benapole area experienced a serious traffic jam as export-import resumed after three days. The passport holding passengers also suffered due to the stalemate. Meanwhile, import and export through Hili land port remained closed yesterday as the Indians observed Holi festival. Md Abdur Rahman Liton, general secretary of Hili C & F Agent told our Dinajpur correspondent that the Indian side on Sunday issued a letter informing that their office will remain closed on the occasion on March 1.
