6 Jamaat-Shibir men arrested in two dists

Police arrested a Jamaat leader in Gopalganj and five Jamaat-Shibir men in Rajshahi on Sunday. In Gopalganj, police on Sunday arrested Kotalipara upazila Jamaat-e-Islami ameer Solaiman Gazi, 50. Police said, locals handed him over to police due to his suspicious activities, reports a correspondent. After interrogation police showed him arrested under Section 54. Police produced the Jamaat leader before the court of Gopalganj chief judicial magistrate yesterday noon. The court sent him to jail. Locals said, Solaiman Gazi recently distributed some leaflets in the area against prime minister Sheikh Hasina's India visit. They said, views and remarks made by Gazi also aroused suspicion among the neighbours. Kotalipara police station OC Md Ferdous Hossain said, local people alleged that Solaiman Gazi had links with detained Harkatul Jihad (Huji) leader Mufti Abdul Hannan. Police is looking into the allegations, he said. In Rajshahi, police and Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) on Sunday arrested five members of Jamaat and its student wing Shibir from different areas under Motihar police station for their role in February 9 Rajshahi University violence. All the five were sent to jail custody after the police placed them before a court showing them arrested under the police assault case, reports our staff correspondent. Three of the arrestees are students of Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (Ruet). They are Abu Jahid, 24, third year student of mechanical engineering, Shamiul Ahmed, 22, and Khorshed Alam, 22, fourth year students of electronics department. They were arrested from the Ruet campus. Members of Rab-5 arrested Abdur Rashid, 33, a Jamaat worker from Mirzapur area in Rajshahi city while Motihar police arrested Babul Hossain, 24, of Nandigram of Bogra. Tofazzel Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Motihar police station said they were held after a number of previously arrested Jamaat-Shibir men disclosed their names during interrogation. With the five, the total number of arrests in six cases over the Rajshahi University violence rose to 97, he added.
