22 shops gutted in two dists
At least 22 shops were gutted in Kishoreganj and Brahmanbaria on Friday and Thursday.
A correspondent from Kishoreganj reports: A devastating fire at Bazitpur upazila Sadar market on Friday night gutted at least a dozen shops.
Locals said, the fire originated from a cotton shop at about 9:15pm and spread to the adjacent furniture and stationary shops within a short time.
Local firemen and Bhairab fire brigade personnel rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control in an hour-long hectic effort.
Shop owners claimed that the fire damaged goods worth Tk one crore.
In Brahmanbaria, at least 10 shops were gutted by fire near Sultanpur bus stand in Sadar upazila on Thursday night.
UNB quoting fire brigade sources said the fire originated from a furniture shop of Dewan market at about 9:30pm and soon engulfed the adjoining shops.
On information, fire fighters rushed in and doused the flame with the help of local people.
The victim shop owners claimed that cash and valuables worth Tk 20 lakh were gutted in the blaze.
In Benapole, three people were injured as fire broke out in a cold storage following a gas cylinder explosion yesterday morning.
The three were trying to douse the fire at Ulashi Cold Storage. Seriously injured Akbar Ali has been admitted to Jessore Sadar Hospital, reports a correspondent.
Witnesses said, the gas cylinder exploded with a big bang in the morning. Locals informed the fire service men who rushed to the spot and brought the flames under control in three hours of hectic efforts.
Villager Monirul Islam said, people from nearby houses fled their homes in fear. The farmers suffered loss as crops in the fields near the cold storage caught fire. The fire also damaged machineries and other goods of the cold storage.
