Rehabilitate Aila victims, repair embankments

Human chain in Khulna demands

Unnayan, a socio-economic organisation, formed a huge human chain yesterday morning at the Picture Palace cinema intersection in the city. The participants demanded rehabilitation of Aila affected people in coastal belts of greater Khulna including step for care of the homeless and effective and sustainable plan to save millions from being victims of adverse impact of climate change in future. The programme was followed by a rally at the same place. Presided by chairperson of Unnayan and editor of The Daily Tribune Begum Ferdausi Ali, the rally was addressed by editor of Dainik Purbanchal and president of Greater Khulna Development Action Coordination Committee Alhaj Liakat Ali, president of Khulna Press Club Ahmad Ali Khan, general secretary of Khulna Press Club S M Zahid Hossain, secretary general of Greater Khulna Development Action Coordination Committee Haider Gazi Salahuddin Runu, executive director of NGO Rupantar Swapon Guha, chairperson of Khulna Nagorik Forum freedom fighter Sheikh Abdul Qayum, executive director of Manab Sheba Samajik Unnayan Sangstha Shamima Sultana Shilu, executive director of Rupsha Mahila Kalyan Sangstha Arifa Yasmin, president of Nirapad Sarak Chai Hasibur Rahman and ex-ward councillor of KCC Mamnura Zakir Khukumoni. Addressing the rally, Ferdousi Ali called upon the government to complete repair of all damaged embankments in the coastal belts before the rainy season to save lives and property of Aila-hit people of Khulna, Bagerhat and Satkhira districts. She said thousands of people are still staying in a sub-human condition in the makeshift camps under open sky in all these Aila-hit districts without adequate food, drinking water and medicine.
