Charges pressed against 23 Shibir men

Police yesterday pressed charges against 23 leaders and activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir and a government official in a case they (police) filed after a clash between BCL and Shibir at Meherpur Government College on January 15. The accused are Meherpur Sadar upazila Assistant Primary Education Officer Saki Salam, Shibir district unit President Iqbal Hossain, Secretary Sohel Rana Dollar, activists Benzir Ahmed, Sohel Rana, Ariful Islam, Sagar, Mustafizur Rahman, Mukhlesur Rahman, Anwar Hossain, Masuduzzaman, Mofizur Rahman, Ariful Islam, Rony Islam, Robiul islam, Abu Sayeed, Sadikur Rahman Parvez, Sahin, Rajib, Rafiul, Ferdous, Rohidul, Abdul Halim and Imran Habib. Police said Assistant Primary Education Officer Saki Salam has been made an accused in the case as he gave shelter to 23 Shibir leaders and activists at a mess owned by him. Shibir and BCL men clashed at Meherpur Government College over freshers' reception on January 15, leaving 30 from both sides injured. Three journalists were also injured during the incident. Police later arrested 23 Shibir men from the mess and recovered firearms from a nearby pond owned by Saki Salam. A case was filed with Sadar Police Station under Speedy Trail Act. Police in the charge sheet mentioned that Saki Salam was a former Shibir cadre and is still involved with Jamaat-Shibir politics. He gave shelter to the Shibir men who launched the attack on BCL leaders and activists on January 15. The arrested Shibir men told police that Saki Salam provided a shelter for them at his house after the clash. They also gave statements before a magistrate's court under 164, police said in the charge-sheet.
