Fire damages betel leaf on 10 bighas of land in Jhenidah
Criminals' hand behind heinous act alleged

Betel leaf on 10 bighas of land worth Tk 60 lakh was totally destroyed by a devastating fire that broke out at Roygram village under Kaliganj upazila on Friday night. The badly affected landowners are Haren Das, Ratan Das, Shambhu Das, Shukumar Roy, Deben Das and Moni Das. Betel leaf plantation on two bighas of land owned by Hemanta Das, Ratan Das and Shambhu Das each, betel leaf plantation on one and a half bighas of land owned by Shukumar Roy and Moni Das each and betel leaf plantation on one bigha of land owned by Haren Das and Deben Das each were completely damaged. While visiting the spot, the landowners told this correspondent that unscrupulous people might have been behind the heinous act that began at about 9:30 pm on Friday. “How shall I repay the loan of AKR betel leaf vendor of Dhaka,” lamented Hemanta Das. “I have no other way to maintain my family”, Hemanta cried. Another landowner Shambhu Das said that he had taken lease of two bighas of land from Swapan doctor of the village. He further said that he had taken loan amounting to Tk one lakh from AKR betel leaf vendor of Dhaka while he had sold betel leaf worth Tk 40 thousand only. “What shall I do now?” he posed a question to this correspondent and said, “How shall I maintain my family consisting of two children?” On information, fire fighters from Kotchandpur and Jhenidah Sadar upazila reached the spot after 45 minutes of the incident and extinguished fire with the help of villagers said, Jahir Uddin, an elderly villager.
