Sundarbans Day today
Sundarbans Day will be observed in several districts of the Southwestern region of the country today.
Sundarbans Academy has taken up elaborate programmes to observe the day at Khulna Press Club. The programmes include cultural function at 10:00am., documentary on Sundarbans at 11:00am. discussion meeting at 11:30 am and prize distribution at 1:15 pm.
Sundarban Day was declared on February 14, 2001 at a national level meeting held in Khulna with former president Justice Shahabuddin Ahmed as the chief guest.
Aim and objective for holding this meeting were to create mass awareness on how to conserve biodiversity of the world's largest mangrove forest and increase revenue earnings by preserving and protecting its resources.
The 18-point Sundarbans declaration was unanimously accepted at a rally held at Shahid Hadis Park on February 16 same year urging the government to save it from being ruined. But none of the proposals could be implemented in the last nine years.
