Move to protect life, property from calamity
The Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) has undertaken a special project for protection of lives and property of people and cattle from the onslaught of natural calamities in nine coastal districts of south-western region.
The districts are Khulna, Bagerhat, Satkhira, Barguna, Pirojpur, Patuakhali, Bhola, Barisal and Jhalakhthi.
Work on the three-year project is expected to begin in April this year with financial assistance of World Bank (WB), said a highly placed source at Khulna LGED office. According to project profile, specially built cyclone shelters would be used as primary schools at normal period while those would be turned into cyclone shelters to lodge homeless people in time of natural calamities like cyclone and tidal surge.Apart from this, earthen high structures (Killa) would also be erected in the districts to be used as shelters of domestic animals like cows and goats at times of natural disasters.
The project work is likely to be completed by 2013, LGED sources said.
About 12 hectares of land have been acquired for the project, the sources further said.
