Rice meant for FWP seized from pvt firm: one held

Police early yesterday seized 20 tonnes of rice meant for government Food for Works Programme (FWP) worth Tk 4.35 lakh from Nurjahan Agro Processing Industries Private Limited at Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) Industrial Estate here. Police also arrested a truck driver in this connection. On a tip-off that a truck of rice was being unloaded at the firm from a truck at around 10:30 pm on Tuesday, a police team of Bagerhat Sadar police station raided the firm and seized 20 tonnes of rice contained in 279 sacks. Later, police took away the rice to Sadar police station in two trucks early yesterday. Police also arrested truck driver Mojahid Howlader, 32, for carrying the rice from Burirdanga Union Parishad (UP) chairman's house to Nurjahan Agro Processing Industries Private Limited. The Directorate of Relief and Rehabilitation allotted the entire rice for distressed people of Burirdanga union under Mongla upazila, police said. But Burirdanga UP chairman Subhas Roy illegally sold the government allotted rice to one Mehedi Hasan, said an employee of Nurjahan Agro Processing Industries Private Ltd named Md Golam Mostafa. Earlier, Hasan took rented a portion of the firm from its owner who was using its other part, Mostafa said. A case has been filed with Sadar police station under Special Powers Act.
