Six people were arrested while felling trees on both sides of Jhenidah-Chuadanga road under Jhenidah Sadar upazila yesterday morning. The arrestees are Abdul Karim, Afangir Hossain, Israil Hossain, Harun-or-Rashid, Shahidul Islam and Sumon of Borokamarkundo village under the upazila. Being informed by locals, Chief Executive Officer of Jhenidah Zila Parishad Abdul Halim Molla informed the police who rushed to the spot and arrested the six. Police also seized five felled segun and mehagoni trees from the scene. The arrestees told police that they were cutting down the roadside trees in Saganna area of the road as per order of the zila parishad. But the chief executive officer denied it, saying that they have decided to cut only the dead trees on both sides of the road. Contacted, Executive Engineer of Jhenidah Roads and Highways Sabuj Uddin said the zila parishad has no authority to cut down the trees on both sides of the road. He said stern action will be taken against those involved in cutting trees illegally. Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sadar Police Station said they seized the felled trees and brought them to the police station. Locals alleged that some unscrupulous people in collusion with officials are involved in felling roadside trees. They urged the authorities concerned to take necessary measures to save the valuable trees.
