One to die, 13 get life for murder in Bogra

A court here on Monday sentenced one person to death and 13 others to life term imprisonment for killing one person in a dispute over harvesting of paddy at Pathanpara village under Sonatola upazila. Joynal, 50, to die and 13 others got life for killing neighbour Khoka Miah. Judge Kazi Shahina Nigar of Bogra first additional sessions judge court also fined each of the lifers Tk 50,000. According to prosecution, Joynal and 13 others went to cut paddy from a disputed land at Pathanpara in the morning of November 14, 1993. Being obstructed, Joynal hit Khoka Miah with a sharp weapon. Khoka died while under treatment at hospital. Khoka's brother Shah Alam later filed a murder case with Sonatola police station against 22 people. In another verdict, a Panchagarh court on Monday sentenced four people to life term imprisonment and fined each Tk 5000, in default, to suffer another six months in jail, for killing a man in a dispute over a piece of land on December19, 2007. District and Sessions Judge Abdus Salek delivered the verdict in a crowded courtroom in presence of all accused. The convicts are Abdur Rahim, his wife Kesi Begum, their daughter Rina Begum and relative Zahirul Islam of Kalikapur village under Atwary upazila. According to prosecution, in the morning of December,19, 2007 when Abu Sayed was cutting paddy of the disputed crop field, the convicts and their accomplices resisted. At one stage they beat up Abu Sayed with iron rods leaving him seriously injured. Locals rescued him and took him to Atwary health complex where the on-duty doctor declared Abu Sayed dead. Victim's relative Anwara Begum filed a case with Atwary police station on the same day accusing 14 people including the convicts. Investigation Officer (IO) submitted charge sheet in the case on October 23, 2008.
