Robber killed in police firing, 4 others arrested
Two houses and a jewellery shop were looted yesterday and on Monday in Habiganj and Mymensingh while a robber was killed in police firing and four others were arrested on Sunday in Dinajpur.
Our Staff Correspondent in Sylhet reports: Armed robbers looted valuables and cash including foreign currency worth about Tk 3 lakh yesterday from a banker's house at Bahubal in Habiganj.
A gang numbering about 15 raided the house of Abdul Mukit, retired branch manager of Uttara Bank by breaking open the doors. They took away gold ornaments, six mobile phone sets, 2500 US dollars, passport and other papers of Mukit's daughter Khairunnesa.
As Abdus Salam, Mukit's younger brother, attempted to resist the robbers, they chopped him with billhook.
In another incident of robbery at Anwarpur in Habiganj town on Monday, gold ornaments, cash and valuables worth about Tk 5 lakh were looted from the house of a businessman.
According to the victims, 10-15 armed robbers entered into the house of Faisal Ahmed at about 3:00 am by breaking open the locks of three gates. They took the inmates hostage at gunpoint and decamped with10 tolas of gold ornament, one lakh taka, five mobile sets and other valuables.
In Mymensingh, a gang looted a jewellery shop at Durgabari Road in the district town in the early hours of Monday.
They took away gold and cash worth about Tk 23 lakh from Janata Jewellery owned by Dipak Ghosh.
Police said, a gang of about 10 entered into the jewellery shop by breaking open the collapsible gate at around 4:00 am.
They lifted a iron volt containinmg 55 tolas of gold ornaments and Tk 62 thousand on a truck and hurried away.
Police later recovered the open iron volt at Kalirbazar in Trishal upazila yesterday. They also picked up night guard Saiful Islam for interrogation.
In Dinajpur, an alleged robber was killed in police firing during a night coach robbery at Kanaihat in Ghoraghat upazila Sunday midnight.
Two police constables and a bus passenger were also injured in attack by the robbers.
UNB quoting police said, a band of robbers intercepted the Dinajpur bound night coach of Hanif Enterprise coming from Dhaka and started looting the belongings of the passengers at gunpoint.
Hearing the hue and cry, a police patrol team rushed to the spot.
The criminals attacked the team leaving two policemen and a passenger wounded.
At a stage, the law enforcers opened fire, killing one unidentified robber on the spot. Other gang members, however, managed to flee the scene.
Another report says, police held four of an inter-district gang while they were preparing to commit a robbery on Dinajpur-Birampur highway in Birampur upazila.
The arrestees are Afzal Hossain, 35, Shafiqul Islam,40, Anwar, 28, and Abul Kalam, 30, of Dinajpur district.
Being tipped-off, police raided Katkapur area at about 7:30 pm and held the four along with some explosive devices.
