BCL men sued on charge of attacking police

Police sued 15 leaders and activists including president of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) Meherpur district unit on Friday on charge of attacking on-duty police. Constable Monirul Islam of Meherpur police line filed the case. According to the case, two local teams arranged a cricket tournament at Meherpur Government Boys' School ground on December 28. At one stage, supporters of the teams locked in altercation over the match which turned into a clash. A police team from Meherpur Sadar police station rushed to the spot. But the team was attacked by a feuding group as the law enforcers tried to control the situation. Constable Monirul was severely injured in the incident. Later, police identified the attackers as leaders and activists of BCL Meherpur district unit. On recovery, Monirul filed the case on Friday but none was arrested till sending this report yesterday afternoon. Meanwhile, extortionists attacked an Awami League (AL) leader in Meherpur while threatened a trader in Chuadanga on Friday night. According to police, criminals hurled two bombs on the house of Aliban Mondol at Bagoan village in Mujibnagar upazila in Meherpur at about 9:30 pm. Aliban is president of Bagoan union AL. The bombs damaged the bedroom of Aliban. The AL leader was not in the room during the incident. In Chuadanga, criminals phoned Hamidur Rahman, a trader of Bhalukarrra village in Alamdanga upazila and demanded Tk 2 lakh from him. The criminals asked Hamidul to pay the amount in two days. They also threatened him with dire consequences like bombing if he fails to pay the money within the period. The gang told him not to file any case. Contacted, Alamdanga police said none came to file any case in this regard.
