Every year as summer returns, so does the challenge of doing long-lasting makeup. Along with the high temperatures and humidity, the search for the right products and techniques to have a durable makeup look becomes a part of our everyday struggles.

To make that search a little easier, we have curated a short guide containing some simple ways to ensure your makeup stays on longer during the heat.

Almost all long-lasting makeup guides begin by stating the importance of skin prep before doing makeup, and rightfully so.

As we all know, the biggest hurdle in having makeup last longer during hot days is sweat. The skin’s pre-condition before any makeup products are applied is a major contributing factor to sweating. Rubbing ice cubes or spraying some cold water on the face and letting it dry out is a great way to soothe the skin before the main show begins.

According to experts, for a long-lasting makeup look during summer, primers are non-negotiable.

They are always applied before foundation or any other product and are formulated to fill the pores of the skin and help control oil. Regardless of the skin type, primers are highly recommended as they help the other makeup products “grip” onto the skin. For dry skin, liquid-based primers containing hyaluronic acid can be a good choice.

While “glowy” makeup looks and creamy formulas have become more popular recently, in summer they can be the biggest enemy of makeup.

Swapping cream-based foundations and blush for powdered products and a matte makeup look is the ideal solution for humid weather. The powder also helps limit sweating by absorbing moisture.

Though the heat and humidity force many people to opt for more minimalist makeup looks, makeup artists often encourage using this opportunity to maximise on eye makeup instead.

Even if areas of the face such as the T-zone are at risk of excess sweat and oil, the eyelids and their nearby regions are at less of a disadvantage. Matte eyeshadow and waterproof eye-makeup products are the way to go during such weather.

Products and formulas aside, the techniques of applying and blending the makeup are also crucial in ensuring it stays on longer.

Instead of smearing or strongly blending the products against the skin, tapping it gently using brushes or a makeup sponge is highly advised. It is widely believed that relaxed skin is less likely to sweat profusely during and immediately after applying the makeup.

Another non-negotiable product for makeup during summer is setting spray or setting powder. They are a must to ensure all the products are locked in and remain intact for as long as possible. This is usually the final step in the makeup routine, and the product must be applied generously for it to work.

Most of these products are widely available and offer a great variety of brands to choose from. Some small changes to the regular makeup routine, replacement of certain products and adjusting to some new techniques can make a big difference in ensuring your makeup stays put longer during this heat.
