Nizam-Hasina Foundation Hospital holds free eye camp in Bhola

The Nizam-Hasina Foundation Hospital, in collaboration with the Fred Hollows Foundation, organised a free eye camp at Charnoabad in Bhola town yesterday, where 459 people received eye care services.

According to a press release, eye specialists and technicians examined patients and provided primary treatment during the camp. Among those screened, 89 patients who struggled with reading newspapers or books and reciting the Quran due to poor vision were given spectacles free of charge.

Following initial examinations, 83 patients were selected for cataract surgery. Of them, 76 were transported to Nizam-Hasina Foundation Hospital, where further tests were conducted.

Ultimately, 66 patients underwent cataract surgery, all performed free of charge.

Patients also received medicines, protective sunglasses, accommodation and meals at no cost.

The organisers said the foundation arranged nine eye camps in July, through which 4,767 people received primary eye care. During the month, 681 patients underwent free cataract surgeries, while 842 people received spectacles.

Established as an eye hospital in 2010, Nizam-Hasina Foundation Hospital expanded its services after partnering with the Fred Hollows Foundation, an Australia-based nonprofit working to prevent blindness, in 2015. The hospital was upgraded into a general hospital in 2025.

Over the past 16 years, the hospital has provided outpatient services to more than 500,000 people and performed cataract surgeries on over 80,000 patients, said Nizam Uddin Ahmed, chairman of the hospital. He added that the hospital has also carried out around 4,000 specialised surgeries and provided spectacles to approximately 74,000 people, either free of charge or at nominal cost.
