Two more medical universities would be established in Rajshahi and Chittagong to create more specialist doctors and nurses.
A cabinet meeting, held at the Secretariat with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair yesterday, approved in principle the drafts of "Chittagong Medical University Act, 2015" and "Rajshahi Medical University Act, 2015".
Briefing the press about the meeting afterwards, Cabinet Secretary M Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan said the universities would be established according to the National Health Council's decision of last year.
They would offer post-graduate-level studies and bachelor's degrees in nursing, he added.
All medical colleges in Chittagong and Rajshahi, including Chittagong Medical College and Rajshahi Medical College, would be affiliated with the universities.
He said the public universities would be autonomous in terms of administrative and financial management.
The President of the country would be the chancellor of the universities and the tenure of the vice-chancellor and pro-vice-chancellors would be four years, which would be extendable for a second term.
