Embankment around Sirajganj town collapses into Jamuna river

Star Digital Report

A portion of the protective embankment around Sirajganj town has collapsed into the Jamuna as the river is swelling due to heavy downpour and onrush of water.

The 70-metre portion of the embankment went under river water around 2:00pm in the old jail road area, our Tangail correspondent reports quoting locals.

Sirajganj's Water Development Board Executive Engineer Shafiqul Islam said, they have started to put concrete blocks and Geo bags on the embankment so that it can be protected for now.

The district's Deputy Commissioner Faruk Ahmed along with other officials visited the spot.

The 2.5-kilometre dam was built in 2001 to protect Sirajganj town from Jamuna river erosion.
