Academy Museum set to screen 12 iconic Indian films
For the first time in the history of Indian cinema, the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles will host a screening of 12 iconic and classic Indian films. Titled "Emotion in Colour: A Kaleidoscope of Indian Cinema", this special event will take place from March 7 to April 19.
The lineup of 12 classic films will notably include Satyajit Ray's "Kanchenjungha", along with "Jodhaa Akbar" starring Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai, and "Devdas", featuring Shah Rukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit, and Aishwarya Rai.
The exhibition aims to preserve and celebrate the legacy of Indian cinema. The selection of films has reportedly been meticulously curated by Shivendra Singh, the founder-director of the Film Heritage Foundation, who is also a filmmaker and film conservationist.
This screening arrangement will highlight the artistic use of colour in Indian cinema, its unique visual storytelling, and the emotional resonance embedded in these films.
The lineup of classic and critically acclaimed films includes, "Mother India" (1957), directed by Mehboob Khan, "Manthan" (1976) by Shyam Benegal, "Amar Akbar Anthony" (1977) by Manmohan Desai, "Ishanou" (1990), a Manipuri film by Aribam Syam Sharma, "Kummatty" (1979), a Malayalam film by Aravindan Govindan, "Mirch Masala" (1987) by Ketan Mehta, "Devdas" (2002) by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, "Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge" (1995) by Aditya Chopra, "Jodhaa Akbar" (2008) by Ashutosh Gowariker, "Kanchenjungha" (1962), a Bengali film by Satyajit Ray, "Maya Darpan" (1972), a Hindi film by Kumar Shahani, and "Iruvar" (1997), a Tamil film by Mani Ratnam.
This remarkable exhibition will bring together both classic and widely celebrated Indian films, offering audiences a glimpse into the rich cinematic heritage of India.
