Drawing inspiration from Taufiq al-Hakim’s Egyptian theatre and stories by Khalil Gibran, the production critiques the political machinery behind modern-day wars.

Prominent theatre troupe Dhaka Padatik is set to stage the 38th production of its acclaimed historical drama “Trial of Surya Sen” on July 20 at the Experimental Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA).

Acclaimed Bangladeshi artist Muhammad Monsoor Kazee has returned with his third solo exhibition titled “Co-existence of Abstract”, now open at Safiuddin Shilpalay, Dhanmondi.

In observance of the historic July Mass Uprising, a month-long series of commemorative events titled “July Reawakening” is being held under the patronage of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs and organised by Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.

The initiative explores the killing of Abu Sayed, a student activist at Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur, who was tragically killed during a protest on July 16, 2024. His death became a pivotal moment in the July Uprising, which ultimately led to the downfall of Sheikh Hasina’s government.

Born on July 11, 1936, in Brahmanbaria, Al Mahmud (full name - Mir Abdus Shukur Al Mahmud) played a pivotal role in reshaping Bangla poetry in the post-Tagore era. His acclaimed collection 'Sonali Kabin' (Golden Dowry) brought together themes of rural life, love, history, nationalism, and spirituality in a lyrical and distinctly local voice, earning him wide recognition.

Alongside the drawings, six terracotta works are also on display. Unlike the charcoal pieces, these are not based on mythological themes but are inspired by personal ideas and abstract forms. The exhibition remains open to visitors from 12:00 pm to 9:00 pm daily until July 11. For art lovers and heritage enthusiasts alike, “Mati, Murti O Manas” offers a rare opportunity to view the past through a contemporary lens—one that honours history while sketching out its quiet beauty in charcoal.

The exhibition flows from abstraction to figuration, from lyrical introspection to social critique. Visitors encounter personal mythologies, reinterpretations of folk traditions, and unflinching meditations on contemporary life, underscored by an Alliance Française de Dhaka press release.

Bangladeshi dancer and choreographer Anandita Khan is currently in the UK for “Blue Sky”, a collaborative project with Sampad South Asian Arts and Heritage, supported by the British Council’s Connections Through Culture grant. The project uses a combination of dance and language to raise awareness about climate change, drawing parallels between the environmental challenges faced by communities in Bangladesh and those in Birmingham.

Alliance Française de Dhaka is set to launch “Aesthete”, a group exhibition showcasing the works of 29 emerging and independent Bangladeshi artists. The exhibition opens on July 8 at 6 pm at La Galerie and will remain open to visitors until July 15. Viewing hours are from 3 pm to 9 pm, Monday through Saturday.

“Invisible Stories” was developed following more than three months of field research across Bangladesh, during which Cannac collected folk materials and inspiration from various regions, including the Sundarbans. The resulting performance is rooted in the form of body puppetry, in which both human actors and puppets share the stage, often blurring the line between the two.

Jagorony Theatre is set to stage its 21st production titled “Kadamati”, following an extensive rehearsal phase and technical preview. The play will premiere on July 4 at the Nilima Ibrahim Auditorium of Bangladesh Mohila Samity. Written by Aniket Pal and directed by Debashish Ghosh, the play brings forth an intimate narrative of displacement and longing.

Directed by Shamim Shagor and written by Momena Chowdhury herself, the production offers a layered exploration of memory, silence, and a woman’s quiet defiance against a lifetime of emotional erosion.

Written and directed by Ilias Nabi Faisal, “Agni Shrabon” arrives with a quiet urgency. Staged with support from the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, the play explores cycles of power, resistance, and the enduring human desire for peace.

In the heart of London’s East End, the Spitalfields Studios Gallery recently unveiled "Echoes of Existence", a solo exhibition by the Bangladeshi artist Ruhul Amin Tarek— representing a thoughtful, spiritually charged journey through form, time, memory, and landscape. With 64 diverse works ranging from woodcuts to drypoints, acrylics to pencil sketches, Tarek invites the viewer into a contemplative realm where art becomes a mirror for inner life, the human condition, and nature’s silent testimony.

After a hectic day at work, I found myself rushing to Gallery Chitrak last Sunday evening to indulge in “Nandonpot”, a group art exhibition inaugurated on the day of the summer solstice (June 21). I could hardly control my excitement before entering the gallery, and like most of the time, I was not disappointed. “Nandonpot” is a visual group art exhibition displaying artworks by artists from various generations. Notably, Eminent artist Professor Hamiduzzaman Khan, art critic Moinuddin Khaled, and Country Chief Risk Officer Mohammad Enamul Haque of Standard Chartered Bank, attended the opening ceremony as guests.
