Remembering Rahman, the first ‘romantic hero’ of Bangladeshi cinema
Abdur Rahman was one of the most prominent faces on the silver screen during the 1960s and 1970s. He is known as the first ‘romantic hero’ of Bangladeshi cinema. A bleak festive season for new movies
The ongoing pandemic has led to significant impediments for the Bangladeshi film industry. None of the big-budgeted films were released since March last year, during special occasions such as Eid, Durga Puja, Pohela Boishakh, and Valentine’s Day, among other festivities. More than 25 new commercial films are awaiting release. Though cinema halls were reopened from time to time, directors and producers were reluctant to release new films, due to low audience turnout.

74th Cannes Film Festival: Un Certain Regard winners announced
The award ceremony for the Un Certain Regard section of the 74th Cannes Film Festival took place on the evening of July 16. The fate of the section’s 20 films was decided by a five-member jury, led by English filmmaker Andrea Arnold. Director and writer Abdullah Mohammad Saad’s “Rehana Maryam Noor” created immense buzz as the first Bangladeshi film to be selected for the Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes Film Festival. Saad was also the only South Asian with a title in the competitive section.

Grasshopper Film, Gratitude Films acquire US rights to ‘Rehana Maryam Noor’
Grasshopper Film and Gratitude Films have jointly acquired US distribution rights to Abdullah Mohammad Saad’s Cannes Film Festival’s Un Certain Regard selection “Rehana Maryam Noor” from sales agent Films Boutique. The film will open in cinemas in early 2022 followed by digital, home video, and non-theatrical releases.

Kishwar Chowdhury secures third place in MasterChef Australia 2021
Culinary sensation Kishwar Chowdhury is the first Bangladeshi-Australian to reach the grand finale of MasterChef Australia. She secured the third place in the last episode of Season 13. Kishwar faught for the title of MasterChef Australia against Justin Narayan and Pete Campbell. The final challenge of the show was set by Peter Gilmore, one of Australia’s most celebrated and awarded chefs. The finalists made a savoury dish of shaved squid, shiitake custard, koji butter and pinstriped peanuts. For dessert, they replicated Gilmore’s ‘golden crackle’ from Bennelong, his restaurant at the Sydney Opera House. After the final challenge, Justin was the frontrunner with 125 points to Pete’s 124 and Kishwar’s 114. While Justin walks away with $250,000, Pete is awarded with $ 30,000, and Kishwar receives $ 20,000.
