Abdur Rahman was one of the most prominent faces on the silver screen during the 1960s and 1970s. He is known as the first ‘romantic hero’ of Bangladeshi cinema.  In his acting career, he was featured in multiple Urdu and Pashto films as well. Today marks the 16th death anniversary of the iconic actor.

The ongoing pandemic has led to significant impediments for the Bangladeshi film industry.  None of the big-budgeted films were released since March last year, during special occasions such as Eid, Durga Puja, Pohela Boishakh, and Valentine’s Day, among other festivities. More than 25 new commercial films are awaiting release. Though cinema halls were reopened from time to time, directors and producers were reluctant to release new films, due to low audience turnout.

Popular Bangladeshi actors Apu Biswas, Zayed Khan and eminent Indian actor Rituparna Sengupta will share the silver screen in “Zokhom”. The film is directed by Apurba Rana. Produced by Selim Khan, the production will release under the banner of Shapla media.

Bangladeshi- Irish model Maksuda Akhter Prioty won the prestigious top model award at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. The award was sponsored by Integrity Magazine, and models from across the globe participated in the competition. Prioty’s outstanding performance at the ramp won her the title of the top model.

Filmmaker Reza Ghatok’s project “Haribol” has been stuck in the Bangladesh Film Censor Board for the past two years. According to the director, obstacles started surfacing as soon as he visited the Censor Board to submit the film.

 The award ceremony for the Un Certain Regard section of the 74th Cannes Film Festival took place on the evening of July 16. The fate of the section’s 20 films was decided by a five-member jury, led by English filmmaker Andrea Arnold. Director and writer Abdullah Mohammad Saad’s “Rehana Maryam Noor” created immense buzz as the first Bangladeshi film to be selected for the Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes Film Festival. Saad was also the only South Asian with a title in the competitive section.

The trailer of the upcoming Chorki original film “YouTumor” was released earlier today. One of the most anticipated releases of this year, “YouTumor” is directed by Adnan Al Rajeev.

Grasshopper Film and Gratitude Films have jointly acquired US distribution rights to Abdullah Mohammad Saad’s Cannes Film Festival’s Un Certain Regard selection “Rehana Maryam Noor” from sales agent Films Boutique. The film will open in cinemas in early 2022 followed by digital, home video, and non-theatrical releases.

Veteran Indian actor Surekha Sikri has passed away today due to a cardiac arrest. The 75 year old was known for films such as “Badhaai Ho” and TV shows like “Balika Vadhu”.

Anurag Kashyap has come onboard to produce Indian filmmaker Suman Sen’s directorial debut “Eka” (Solo), under his banner Good Bad Films. Set in Kolkata, the project is currently at the scripting stage. “Eka” is jointly produced by Arifur Rahman and Bijon Imtiaz from Bangladesh, Dominic Welinski from France and Sumon Sen from India.

A renowned actress of the 60’s, Shabnam has been a part of both Bangladeshi and Pakistani cinema. She rose to fame with the Urdu film, ‘Chanda’, after which she never had to look back.

The teaser of acclaimed Indian director Srijit Mukherji’s Hoichoi original series, “Robindronath Ekhane Kawkhono Khete Aashenni”, based on Mohammad Nazim Uddin’s best-selling thriller novel of the same name, was released recently.

Today marks the 11th death anniversary of National Film Award-winning actor Bulbul Ahmed. Known for his charm and impeccable screen presence, the iconic artiste was born on September 15, 1941, in Dhaka. He started his acting career with a stage performance in 1965. In 1968, he made his first appearance on television.

Acclaimed Indian director Anurag Kashyap praised Abdullah Mohammad Saad’s second feature film, "Rehana Maryam Noor”, at the 74th Cannes Film Festival. In a video posted by the film’s lead actor Azmeri Haque Badhon, Kashyap shared his comments on the film.

Culinary sensation Kishwar Chowdhury is the first Bangladeshi-Australian to reach the grand finale of MasterChef Australia. She secured the third place in the last episode of Season 13. Kishwar faught for the title of MasterChef Australia against Justin Narayan and Pete Campbell. The final challenge of the show was set by Peter Gilmore, one of Australia’s most celebrated and awarded chefs. The finalists made a savoury dish of shaved squid, shiitake custard, koji butter and pinstriped peanuts. For dessert, they replicated Gilmore’s ‘golden crackle’ from Bennelong, his restaurant at the Sydney Opera House. After the final challenge, Justin was the frontrunner with 125 points to Pete’s 124 and Kishwar’s 114. While Justin walks away with $250,000, Pete is awarded with $ 30,000, and Kishwar receives $ 20,000.
