'The Odyssey' sets new record as highest-grossing R-rated film
Christopher Nolan's “The Odyssey” has become the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time, surpassing the worldwide box-office record previously held by “Deadpool & Wolverine”.
The Matt Damon-led epic has earned approximately $1.352 billion worldwide, overtaking “Deadpool & Wolverine”, which grossed $1.338 billion during its 2024 theatrical run.
Based on Homer's ancient Greek epic poem, “The Odyssey” stars Damon as Odysseus, alongside Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong'o and Zendaya. The film follows Odysseus as he attempts to return home to Ithaca after the Trojan War.
The film was released in cinemas on July 17 and has continued its strong theatrical run despite the arrival of other major releases. It has earned more than $500 million in North America, while its international total has pushed the worldwide figure beyond $1.35 billion.
The record had belonged to “Deadpool & Wolverine” since 2024, when the Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman-led Marvel film overtook “Joker” to become the highest-grossing R-rated film. Its worldwide total eventually reached $1.338 billion.
Reynolds responded to the change in record-holder with a message on social media, congratulating Nolan's film and its cast and crew.
“Congratulations to the entire cast and crew of The Odyssey for becoming the highest grossing R-rated movie of all time. That is one helluva car,” Reynolds wrote, referring to the Honda Odyssey minivan that features in “Deadpool & Wolverine”.
The new milestone also makes “The Odyssey” the highest-grossing film of Nolan's career, surpassing the worldwide earnings of “The Dark Knight Rises” and “Oppenheimer”.
Rated R for violence and some language, “The Odyssey” runs for two hours and 52 minutes and was released by Universal Pictures.
