‘Michael’ becomes highest-grossing biopic

The Michael Jackson biopic "Michael" has become the highest-grossing biographical film in cinema history, surpassing Christopher Nolan's Oscar-winning "Oppenheimer" at the global box office.

According to distributor Lionsgate, the film has earned an estimated $977 million worldwide since its theatrical release in April, edging past "Oppenheimer", which concluded its box office run with approximately $975 million.

Starring Jaafar Jackson as the late King of Pop, "Michael" also set a new benchmark for musical biopics during its opening weekend. The film debuted with $97.2 million in North America and $121.6 million internationally, delivering a worldwide opening of $218.8 million. It also eclipsed the previous domestic opening record for a musical biopic, held by 2015's "Straight Outta Compton".

The biographical drama traces Michael Jackson's journey from his early days with The Jackson 5 to his emergence as one of the most influential entertainers in music history. Alongside his professional achievements, the film explores key moments from his personal life and solo career.

Directed by Antoine Fuqua from a screenplay by John Logan, the film features an ensemble cast including Nia Long, Juliano Valdi, KeiLyn Durrel Jones, Laura Harrier, Miles Teller and Colman Domingo.

Following its successful theatrical run, "Michael" became available on Premium Digital and Premium Video on Demand platforms on June 9 through services including Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Google TV and YouTube. Physical editions on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K UHD are scheduled for release on July 14.

The film's commercial success has also paved the way for a sequel, which is currently in development.
