Chanchal Chowdhury’s ‘Shekor’ and ‘Azadi’ set for India release
Chanchal Chowdhury is one of Bangladesh’s most celebrated actors. Every film he has appeared in has drawn widespread attention and praise. He won the hearts of millions with “Monpura”, and his more recent films “Bonolota Express” and “Domm" have earned him equal admiration.
Beyond Bangladesh, he has also made a mark in Indian Bengali cinema. Continuing that journey, he has now completed shooting two Kolkata productions, both of which are awaiting release.
The first film is “Shekor”, directed by Bratya Basu. The second is “Azadi”, directed by Suman Mukhopadhyay. “Shekor” is a literature-based drama, while “Azadi" tells a story rooted in the Partition of India.
“‘Shekor’ will release this year — the work is progressing accordingly. ‘Azadi’ will come out next year. That film will travel to major festivals,” said Chanchal.
Describing his role in “Shekor”, he said, “An old man and an old woman live side by side in a village. They were in love in their youth, but never married. The film revolves around their two families. It is a deeply personal, domestic story. I play the son of the old man.”
On “Azadi", he said, “I play a police officer. It is an emotional story — a story of Partition. It will touch everyone who watches it.”
He spoke warmly about both directors: “Bratya Basu and Suman Mukhopadhyay are both tremendously talented and deeply knowledgeable filmmakers. Working with them has been a wonderful experience.”
Reflecting on the two roles, he added, “The two characters are very different from each other. I tried to fully immerse myself in both. Once the films release, the audience will judge how well I have done. But I believe two very good films are on their way.”
Meanwhile, “Bonolota Express” continues its theatrical run and is still drawing enthusiastic crowds. “Domm” is also currently screening.
“‘Bonolota Express’ has truly won over the audience. Everyone is appreciating it — that really means a lot. And people are watching ‘Domm' as well,” said Chanchal.
