Six-day theatre festival honouring Syed Badruddin Hossain to begin on June 25

Padatik Natya Sangsad will host the annual Syed Badruddin Hossain Memorial Theatre Festival and Award Ceremony from June 25 to 30 in memory of late theatre personality, language movement activist, educator and lifelong Padatik president Syed Badruddin Hossain.

The festival, which has been organised annually since 2010, will take place at the National Theatre Hall of the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy. Over six days, six theatre troupes will stage six productions, with performances beginning daily at 7:15pm.

The festival will open on June 25 with "Darpane Sharatshashi" by Desh Natok, directed and supervised by Kamal Ahmed.

On June 26, host troupe Padatik Natya Sangsad will present "Alibaba Ebong Chollish Chor", conceived and directed by Dr. Sudip Chakroborthy.

The following day, June 27, Theatre Factory will stage "Komola Ronger Bodh", directed by Alok Basu.

On June 28, Ethic Natyadal will perform "Surango", directed by Mintu Sarder.

June 29 will feature "Jalaluddin Rumi" by Bangladesh Performance Art Group. The play, written by Apurba Kumar Kundu, has been directed by Sujan Mahbub.

The festival will conclude on June 30 with "Bidhibam" by Jahangirnagar Theatre.

In addition to the stage productions, an outdoor cultural programme titled "Bahirangan" will be held daily on the academy's open-air stage from 5:00pm to 6:30pm. The programme will feature street theatre, recitations, music and dance performances.

As in previous years, commemorative awards recognising contributions to theatre will also be presented during the festival. The names of this year's recipients will be announced on June 23.

Last year's honours were awarded posthumously to Afsar Ahmad, former chair of the Department of Drama and Dramatics at Jahangirnagar University, and stage and lighting designer Md Saiful Islam.
