‘Domm’ is a break from formulaic storytelling: Dolly Zahur
Veteran actor Dolly Zahur has described her Eid release “Domm” as a rare departure from conventional storytelling, as the film draws a positive response from audiences.
A recipient of the Ekushey Padak and the National Film Awards lifetime honour, Zahur remains active across film and television, with multiple releases this Eid.
Speaking about the film, she said, “I watched ‘Domm’ at the premiere. I really liked it. The work has been done with care. The artists have performed well. Audiences have also appreciated it.”
The veteran actor emphasised the film’s narrative strength. “ ‘Domm’ is truly different. It has come out of the usual pattern and chosen a beautiful story. Those who love stories have liked it. I found it quite good.”
Recalling the shoot, Zahur pointed to the connection with audiences during production. “We shot ‘Domm’ outdoors, in a village, during winter. Many people would come to watch the shooting. Some girls even came and hugged me on set. I saw people’s love up close.”
Alongside the film, Zahur appeared in the Eid drama “Madam-er Driver”, directed by Mir Sabbir, where she played a mother.
“The story is good. I had many scenes with Deepa Khandakar. The ending is very beautiful. Viewers have responded positively to the bond between the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law,” she said.
The actress added, “Mir Sabbir called me one day about the drama. After doing the work, I can see that audiences have taken it well.”
Having played maternal roles throughout her career, Zahur said the emotional connection extends beyond performance. “After doing so many mother roles, many artists call me ‘Maa’ and respect me like one. I love and care for them deeply. This love is very emotional. When someone calls me ‘Maa’, it feels very good.”
On younger performers, she said, “They respect me a lot, and I like them too. We are all like a family.”
Zahur is also currently appearing in the television serial “Porompara”, airing on Deepto TV, which has gained popularity among viewers.
“Many people talk about this drama. It is something audiences enjoy. I also feel a kind of satisfaction working in it,” she said.
