Rab recovers artefact, arrests 2 'smugglers'

Rab recovered a statue of Laxmi Narayan, made of touchstone, and arrested two persons from Dhaka's Shah Ali area yesterday afternoon.

On information that the statue, weighing 34 kg, was to be smuggled, a team of Rab carried out a raid around 4:00pm and made the arrest, said Mozammel Haque, commanding officer of Rab-4.

The arrestees are Mizanur Rahman, 40, and Shahidul Islam, 41, said the Rab official.

In primary interrogation, the arrestees told Rab that they are members of a smuggling gang and have long been collecting statues and artefacts to smuggle out the country, he said.
