Man killed in ‘gunfight’ with Rab in Tongi

A man was killed in "gunfight" with Rab members in Gazipur's Tongi area last night.

The deceased was identified as Rokon Sikder, 33, son of Tota Sikder of Haji Mazar slum area.

Rab claimed Rokon is a drug peddler and accused in at least 20 cases.

The gunfight happened around 11:30pm when a team of Rab-1 carried out a raid there, after learning about drug trading, said ANM Imran Khan, assistant director of Rab's Legal and media wing.

Sensing presence of law enforcers, drug peddlers fired at Rab members, who retaliated in self defence, leaving Rokon dead, the Rab official said.

Rab claimed to have recovered a firearm, several bullets and some yaba tablets from the spot.

The body was sent to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital for autopsy.

Shah Alam, officer-in-charge of Tongi Police Station, said Rokon was a listed drug peddler in Tongi area.
