Writ seeks explanation on steps against B’baria perpetrators

A writ petition was filed today with the High Court seeking directives upon the government to explain what steps have been taken against the people responsible for the attacks on Hindus in Nasirnagar upazila of Brahmanbaria on October 30.

Rights organisation Ain O Salish Kendra submitted the petition praying the court to declare illegal the local administration's role in protecting the Hindus, their temples and houses in the upazila.

The rights organisation sought the HC directives upon the government to provide security to Hindu people across the country.

The petitioner requested the court to order the authorities concerned of the government to explain what steps were taken against Upazila Nirbahi Officer and officer-in-charge of Nasirnagar and under which authority they addressed a public rally before the attack on October 30.

According to the constitution, the lawyer added that UNO and OC of the area are public servants and they have no right to address any public rally.

Petitioner's lawyer Abu Obaidur Rahman told The Daily Star the local administration failed to protect Hindu people from communal attacks at Nasirnagar though they are bound to protect to minority people as per the constitution.

Every citizen of the country has right to live according to the constitution. The rights of the Hindu minority people in Nasirnagar have been violated following the attacks on them, he said.

The HC may hear the petition within a few days.
