Worker killed in ship breaking yard

A worker was killed and another injured apparently due to inhaling toxic gas while cleaning oil from the tank of a ship at a ship breaking yard in Sitakunda upazila under the district on Friday afternoon.

The deceased is Biplob Haldar, 27, son of Bijon Haldar of Pirojpur district.

Biplob and his co-worker Md Jasim, 25, were cleaning oil in the tank of a ship of 'Premium Trade Corporation' owned by Nurun Nabi Manik in Baraowlia area of Sitakunda.

"I heard that Biplob was injured in toxic gas when we opened the lead of a tank at 3:00pm," said Biplob's maternal uncle Sanjay Haldar, who also works at the site.

Biplob and Jasim were brought to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) at around 8:00pm, after being refused at three private hospitals of Chittagong city, said Sanjay.

Biplob was declared dead while Jasim was admitted to the hospital.
