Villagers block road in Tangail protesting power outage
People of different villages under Sakhipur upazila of the district blocked Sakhipur-Sagardighi Road yesterday, demanding smooth electricity supply.
They kept the road blocked for four hours from 8:00am by burning tires at Kachua Intersection. They also held a rally there, causing tailback of several hundred vehicles on both sides of the road.
Hundreds of people from Kachua, Ghonarchala, Joairpara, Dapnajarpara, Kamannapara, Araipara, Nichchintapur, Naya Kachua and Ramkha Para villages joined the road blockade programme.
Addressing a rally at the venue, some villagers said boro paddy in the area is drying up due to lack of proper irrigation. The people in the area are not getting more than two to three hours of electricity per day, they alleged.
Moreover, ghost bills are compounding the problems, they added.
The villagers later withdrew the blockade after the chairman of Sakhipur Upazila Parishad Shawkat Shikder, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Rafiqul Islam and Executive Engineer (sales and distribution) Shahadat Ali went to the spot and assured the agitating villagers that they would take immediate steps to ensure smooth supply of electricity in the areas.
