Uncle hacks minor nephew to death

An eight-year-old boy was hacked to death by his drug addict maternal uncle over a trifling matter at Pashchim Koyra village in Madarganj upazila of the district yesterday.

The deceased is Mohammad Shahin, son of Al-Amin and Banu Begum of Phulbaria area under Sadar municipality. Shahin had been staying with his maternal grandparents since age of one.

Meanwhile, villagers caught the killer Mohammad Shahid, 25, son of Dulal Pramanik, from the spot.

Police quoted the arrestee as saying that Shahid locked in an altercation with his nephew over a trifling matter around 7:00am. At one stage, Shahin slapped Shahid on his face and left the house.

An hour later, after catching fish from a nearby pond Shahin returned to the house. Shahid swooped on the boy with a machete and hacked him indiscriminately, leaving him dead on the spot, said Officer-in-Charge (investigation) Rafiqul Islam of Madarganj Police Station.

Being informed, police went to the spot, recovered the body and sent it to Jamalpur General Hospital morgue for autopsy.

The deceased's mother Banu Begum filed a case with the police station against her brother Shahid at noon, the OC added.
