Two housewives murdered in Satkhira, Gaibandha

A man allegedly strangled his wife as she protested his extramarital affair with another woman in Ashashuni upazila of Satkhira district on Friday night.

The deceased is Monjuara Khatun, 23, wife of Mofizul Gazi of Baintola village in the upazila.

Following a quarrel over the issue at around 10:00pm on Friday, Mofizul strangled Monjuara and told locals that she committed suicide.

On information, police went to the spot yesterday morning, recovered the body and sent it to the hospital morgue for autopsy.

No case was filed with Ashashuni Police Station as of filing of this news at 5:00pm yesterday.

Away in Gaibandha, a housewife was hacked to death by criminals hired by a man to kill his wife for not paying dowry at Ovirampur village under Gobindaganj upazila of the district on Thursday night, reports our correspondent.

Quoting locals, police said Abdul Halim of Taluk Kanupur village in the upazila married Jui Khatun, 20 daughter of Zillur Rahman of Ovirampur village one and a half years ago.

Since the marriage, Halim had been putting pressure on his wife to bring Tk 20,000 as dowry from her father. But as the poor father was unable to pay the money Halim kept on torturing Jui.

Not being able to bear the torture, Jui left her husband's house last week and took shelter at her father's house.

The hired goons entered Jui's father's house by breaking open the door, hacked Jui with sharp weapons and fled the scene.

Mozammel Huq, officer-in-charge of Gobindaganj Police Station, said Halim went into hiding soon after the incident. Police are raiding different areas to arrest him.
