Their dream comes true, finally
Hailing from a poor family in Chalbala union, Priyanka Rani has to spend Tk 65 transport fare for a day to reach her college in Kaliganj upazila, about nine kilometres away from the union. She has to go to college by battery-run auto-rickshaw and easy-bike. Priyanka, a resident of Sonahat village, is an HSC first year student of Kakina Uttar Bangla University College.
She can ride bicycle since her schooldays but her family could not afford to buy it. She had a long desire to own a bicycle.
The long awaited moment finally came on Wednesday when she got a bicycle from the chairman of Chalbala union parishad (UP).
Expressing her happiness over getting the bike, Priyanka said from now, she can go to college riding the bicycle every day when the college will reopen after the end of coronavirus pandemic.
Like Priyanka, 14 other HSC first year female students of Kakina Uttar Bangla University College in Kaliganj got bicycle each from UP Chairman Mizanur Rahman Mizu. These students hail from different villages in the union of the upazila.
Another student Alma Khatun of Chalbala village in the same union, said she is very happy to get the bicycle free of cost as her parent has no ability to buy a bicycle. It will be really helpful for her to reach the college. It will also help her to continue her studies.
Kaliganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Rabiul Hasan and UP Chairman Mizanur Rahman Mizu handed over bicycles to 15 female students in the union on Wednesday afternoon.
The chairman said recently, he has been awarded Tk 1.14 lakh by the Local Government and Rural Development (LGRD) for his performance. With the money, he bought 15 bicycles and distributed them among the female students from poor families in different villages of the union.
The chairman further added that he bought the bicycles and gave them to female students of Kakina Uttar Bangla University College as these female students from his union face immense trouble to travel to the distant college. This support will play a great role in the development of women's education in his union.
He would also help the female students to repair the bicycles if necessary, said chairman Mizu.
UNO Rabiul Hasan said the girls from different villages in the union would travel to college together on bicycles from now and it would enlighten the lives of the rural female students.
