Teenage girl gang-raped in Jamalpur, one arrested

Criminals gang-raped a teenage girl at Badechandi village under Sadar upazila of the district on Monday night.

The victim, 14, hails from Jhawla village under the upazila.

Police, quoting the victim's family members, said the girl along with her cousin Ruma went to a fair at Jhawla-Gopalpur Bazar area at around 1:30pm.

The two girls spent a couple of hours at the fair. Then a gang of four, of whom two were acquainted with the girls, had them take drink soft drinks that made them abnormal.

Then the gang took the girls for a ride on a battery-run auto-rickshaw along Gopalpur-Jamalpur road to pass the time, police said.

After sunset, they took the girls to a remote field at Badechandi village to violate them. Ruma managed to escape and took shelter in a house belonging to one Belaet Hossain, said Rafiqul Islam, inspector (investigation) of Sadar Police Station.

Then the criminals gang-raped the minor girl and left her on the roadside in Jhawla-Gopalpur Bazar area at around 1:00am. Locals rescued the victim in a critical condition and rushed her to Jamalpur General Hospital, the inspector added.

The victim's father filed a rape case with the police station accusing the four criminals.

Police arrested one of the four criminals, named Rezaul Islam, 30, son of Momtaj Ali of Badechandi village, on charge of involvement in the gang-rape.

Contacted, Mushairul Islam, civil surgeon of Jamalpur, said the rape victim, who is now out of danger, is undergoing treatment at Jamalpur General Hospital.

Away in Moulvibazar, two alleged rapists were arrested in Baralekha and Kamalganj upazilas of the district on Sunday and the day before, reports our correspondent.

In Baralekha, police arrested accused Bashir Uddin, 35, son of Azir Uddin of the Office Bazar area in the upazila, on Sunday following a case by the victim's father.

On March 22, Bashir raped the fourth grader, 9, when she went to his shop to buy a pen.

A six-year-old girl was violated at Sreenathpur village in Kamalganj upazila on Saturday. Police later arresed accusedMasum Miah, 18, son of Makhon Miah of the village.
