The country's tallest 71-foot idol of Durga is being erected in Begumganj upazila of the district ahead of Durga Puja, the biggest religious festival of Bangalee Hindus, to be celebrated on October 7-11.

The artisans are passing busy time, putting final touches on it and the organisers are expecting a huge gathering at their puja mandop (temporary temple) at Chowmuhani College Road (Yard of Ramendra Saha) in the upazila as the news has already spread through social media.

The 71-foot Durga idol is this year's tallest idol of the country, claimed Tapash Saha, secretary of Bijoya Puja Udjapan Committee.

At least 167 puja mandops have been set up in nine upazilas of Noakhali this year, said Ratan Lal Saha, president of District Puja Udjapan Parishad.

Of them, 19 mandops are prepared in Sadar, 18 in Begumganj, 11 in Sonaimuri, nine in Chatkhil, 12 in Senbag, 13 in Companiganj, 16 in Kabirhat, 29 in Subarnachar and 31 in Hatiya upazila, he said.
