Sunamganj clash leaves two dead
Two people were killed and 25 others injured in a clash between two groups over vandalising an auto-rickshaw at Kalinagor village under Dirai upazila of Sunamganj district yesterday.
The deceased were identified as Hafiz Ullah, 65, and Nur Ahmed, 35, of the village. Police quoted locals as saying that there had been a long-standing feud between two groups -one led by Mafil Ullah and the other by Hafiz Ullah-over establishing supremacy at the village.
Supporters of Mafil Ullah vandalised the CNG-run auto-rickshaw of Hafiz Ullah at around 9:00am. Soon after the incident, Hafiz Ullah and Mafil Ullah had an altercation over the issue.
After an hour, Hafiz Ullah and his supporters equipped with sharp weapons attacked Mafil Ullah and his men, prompting them to retaliate.
The clash left Hafiz Ullah and one of his supporters named Nur Ahmed killed on the spot and 25 others from both sides injured.
Critically injured five were taken to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College and Hospital and the rest to the upazila health complex, police said.
