Rly starts demolishing illegal structures in Jhenidah
The railway authorities and Jhenidah district administration jointly started demolishing illegal structures on both sides of Borobazar Railway Station in Kaliganj upazila of the district yesterday.
Led by Moshtaque Ahmed, Pakshey divisional estate officer under Railway West Zone, and Uttam Kumar Roy, assistant commissioner, railway security forces, and Jhenidah district police joined the drive.
Uttam Kumar Roy said some unscrupulous people have built illegal shops and establishments and set up fish markets grabbing the railway land.
A bus carrying a bridal party collided head-on with a train at Barobazar railway crossing on August 1, 2014. A probe team identified the illegal establishments as being the cause of the accident.
Rafiul Islam, an official of railway western zone and surveyor Shahiduzzaman surveyed the area a few days ago and marked the illegal shops and establishments with red cross marks
Besides, the railway authorities had announced through loudspeaker in Barobazar area that the illegal structures would be abolished soon. Consequently, they started knocking down the illegal structures at around 10:00am yesterday.
Fish trader Kabir Hossain of Barobazar said he took possession of a land through DCR and set up a structure on it, but the railway authorities have demolished the structure.
Kaliganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer Manowar Hossain Mollah said all the illegal shops and establishments in Barobazar railway area will be demolished.
